Netflix is gearing up for a big week of new releases including lots of new or returning movies or series scheduled for the next seven days. Below, we’ll run you through the complete list of what’s coming and give you another heads-up on the removals planned for the week.
Before we dive in, you can find the lineup for the remainder of April 2024 in our separate post here. We’re also tracking all the currently known titles coming in May 2024 as well here.
Now, let’s get into our highlights for the week!
Coming to Netflix: Saturday
The Sony Pictures Classics drama starring Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Goode will make its streaming debut via Netflix this coming weekend.
Set days before the Second World War, you’ll follow Sigmund Freud, a recent escapee with his daughter from the Nazi regime, who receives a visit from the formidable Oxford Don C.S. Lewis for a series of debates and conversations.
From what we can tell, reviews are mainly mixed on this one, albeit with more audience praise. Most of the gripes from critics seem to lay upon the inability of the movie to concisely get to the message it’s trying to tell. The Daily Beast perhaps summarizes that best by saying in their review, “A stately affair that’s never particularly intellectually incisive or revealing, and its stolid execution fails to transcend the material’s inherent staginess.”
Coming to Netflix: Wednesday
It was a close race to be in our most anticipated list between Killing Eve and Black Sails, but given that the former is universally adored, we’d give another shoutout to Black Sails. Originally set to arrive on Netflix US much earlier in the year before being yanked from the schedule, we’re now just days away from the fabulous pirate show from executive producer Michael Bay hitting Netflix
All 38 episodes are scheduled to drop on Netflix, with many familiar faces featured throughout the excellent series that serves as somewhat of a prequel to the beloved Treasure Island story.
Coming to Netflix: Friday
The Netflix Original schedule is much lighter this week, particularly on Friday, which has been cleared for the release of the Zack Snyder fantasy sequel.
We’ve had a few reviews from early screenings, and most praise the film for being better than the first, though they also note some flaws.
Tracking the performance of this movie over the next few weeks will be fascinating. The first film didn’t exactly set the world on fire, as we reported at the time, and it remains to be seen whether enough viewers are invested enough to return to the franchise so soon.
In addition to the above, new weekly episodes of the following shows will drop this week:
